Yes. The big bags of Halloween candy have been getting lighter. We have 14 documented cuts to the bags people buy for trick-or-treat: party-size, fun-size, family-size and Halloween multi-packs, in the US, Canada and New Zealand. The median bag lost 9.9% of its candy, which is an 11.0% hidden price rise per ounce before any change in the shelf price. The biggest cut is Hershey’s Dark Chocolate party bag, 29 oz to 23.9 oz (−17.6%); the New York Post reports both bags carried the same $19.99 price. Between 2019/20 and 2024, LendingTree found the Walmart party packs of Rolo, Reese's miniatures and Hershey's miniatures cut from 40 oz to 35.6–35.9 oz while the price went from $8.98 to $13.24: 64–66% more per ounce. In Canada, CBC found Mars fun size Halloween candy (65 mini bars) down from 782 g to 672 g (−14.1%) and Hershey's Halloween 50 mini candy bars down from 513 g to 481 g (−6.2%) between the 2024 and 2025 Halloween seasons.

A smaller bag at a higher price is a double hit. LendingTree compared Walmart.com listings from 2019/20 (via the Wayback Machine) with 2024; the price per ounce rose much faster than the bag price suggests.

How to check a bag of Halloween candy
- Read the net weight (oz or g), not “party size” or “fun size”. Those names stay when the bag shrinks.
- Use the unit price on the shelf tag (price per ounce). It is the only fair way to compare a 35.6 oz bag with a 40 oz one.
- Count packs: the number of pieces can stay the same while each piece gets lighter, so check the weight as well.
- Compare bag sizes: the biggest bag is not always the cheapest per ounce.
- Look it up: search a brand or type the barcode into the barcode lookup.

Is Halloween candy smaller in 2026?
Yes, for the big multi-packs. The party-size bags that shrank between 2019 and 2024 have not grown back: when the New York Post re-checked in October 2026, Reese's and Rolo party packs were still about 35.6 oz (down from 40 oz) and M&M's milk chocolate party size was 38 oz (down from 42 oz, confirmed by Mars). How much more am I paying per ounce?
If the bag price had stayed the same, the median cut of 9.9% alone means paying 11.0% more per ounce. Prices did not stay the same: where the source recorded both prices (6 bags), 6 got more expensive per unit, by a median of 64.2%.
Why is Halloween candy shrinking?
Candy makers point to the cost of cocoa, sugar and packaging. Hershey told retailers in 2025 it was raising prices and changing the weight and number of pieces in some packs (reported by Bloomberg and the New York Post). Cutting the bag is less visible than raising the shelf price, which is why the net weight is the number to check.
How do I get the most candy for my money?
Ignore “party size”, “family size” and “fun size” on the front and read the net weight and the unit price (per ounce) on the shelf tag. Compare the price per ounce across bag sizes and stores; the biggest bag is not always the cheapest per ounce. For count packs, compare the number of pieces and the weight.
