Is coffee getting smaller? Coffee and tea shrinkflation

By ShrinkRadar · Updated 2026-11-05 · Every figure comes from a sourced case

Yes. Coffee cans, jars and bags keep shrinking. We have 57 documented cases of coffee, tea and cocoa products that got smaller, in Germany, the US, the UK, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, Austria, Spain and South Korea, from 2012 to 2026, 14 of them in 2026. The median pack lost 12.5% of its contents, a 14.3% hidden price rise per unit at the same pack price. The latest: Eight O'Clock The Original whole bean coffee, large bag, 40 oz → 38 oz (2026, mouseprint.org). The biggest: Jacobs 3in1 Kaffeesticks Caramel, 169 g → 112 g (−33.7%). Where the source also recorded the price (32 cases), 32 of 32 cost more per unit afterwards. The can or jar usually keeps its shape and label while the net weight falls, and the “makes up to” cup claim can fall with it (Maxwell House 240 → 210 cups in 2017), so the net weight is the number to check.

How to compare coffee packs

  1. Price per ounce or per 100 g. Shelf tags in the US and UK usually show this; it is the only fair comparison between cans.
  2. Ignore “makes up to N cups”. The cup count assumes a brew strength chosen by the brand and has dropped along with the weight.
  3. Check pods and sticks twice. Both the count per box and the grams per pod can shrink (Jacobs 3in1 sticks went from 180 g to 120 g per box).
  4. Compare jar sizes. Instant coffee jars lost 5–10 g at a time (Nescafé 200 → 190 g, Kenco 100 → 95 g).
  5. Look it up: search a brand, or use the barcode lookup.

Did the price per unit go up?

Where the source recorded the price before and after (32 cases), 32 cost more per unit afterwards.

How much coffee is missing from a can?

Big US canisters lost the most: Folgers went from 51 oz to 43.5 oz (2022) and from 48 oz to 40.3 oz (2024); Maxwell House went from 34.5 oz to 30.6 oz (2012) and from 28 oz to 24.5 oz (2017). Each is a separate report about a specific can.

How do I compare coffee prices fairly?

Use the price per ounce or per 100 g, not per can or jar. For pods and sticks, compare the price per pod and the grams per pod, because the pod count and the fill can both drop. The unit price calculator compares packs by weight or count.

Where does this data come from?

From mouseprint.org, dev.to, thegrocer.co.uk, israelhayom.co.il, meito-abc.co.jp, vzhh.de, morinaga.co.jp, consumentenbond.nl. Each case page quotes or links its source, and we list a cut only when the source gives both the old and the new size or count. We do not estimate.
