Breakfast cereal hidden inflation: +25.0% per unit vs +2.6% official inflation

When a breakfast cereal pack shrinks, its price per gram jumps. In 35 documented breakfast cereal shrinks with shelf prices before and after and an official match (2020–2026), the median price per gram changed +25.0%. Official inflation for the same cases, matched to each one’s category, country and time, was +2.6%: official prices up 2.6%, the ShrinkRadar per-unit price up 25.0% over the same periods.

Breakfast cereal in one line

1. Breakfast cereal: official prices were up 2.6% and the ShrinkRadar per-unit price up 25.0% over the same periods. Packs that shrank cost a median 25.0% more per gram than the pack they replaced, against 2.6% official inflation for the same category, country and time (35 priced cases with an official match, 2020–2026, mostly from Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg).

2. In 94% of those breakfast cereal cases (33 of 35), the price per unit rose more than official inflation for the same category, country and time.

3. Across all 65 documented breakfast cereal shrinks since 2018, the size cut alone raised the price per unit by a median 15.0%, before any change in the shelf price.

4. In Germany, breakfast cereal packs that shrank were up 19.4% per gram, while official prices (Eurostat HICP) for the same cases were down 0.9% over the same periods (20 priced cases with an official match, 2020–2026, all from Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg).

5. In the United States, breakfast cereal packs that shrank were up 45.0% per ounce, while official prices (BLS CPI-U) for the same cases were up 24.3% over the same periods (6 priced cases with an official match, 2024, all from LendingTree shrinkflation study).
